Northern Ireland Leads the Way in Setting New Standards for Coaching in the Martial Arts.

Danny Corr (founder Zanshin Karate Jutsu and British Combat association member) and his team of instructors in Northern Ireland have worked hard to ensure the success of the 1st ever Award in Coaching Studies Programme available to a group of martial arts coaches from different disciplines in Northern Ireland.

In today’s increasingly litigious society and with mounting pressures from insurers to prove coaching competence, the nationally accredited ACS is an excellent practical qualification for martial arts coaches. The award is applicable to coaches regardless of discipline and underpins any sports specific coaching qualifications already achieved.

Danny, his team and a total of 25 martial arts coaches from a variety of disciplines found that working towards the ACS was an excellent way to share good practice and contribute to their continuous professional development as coaches. Key areas covered included:

• Plan and prepare for coaching sessions
• Conduct safe coaching sessions
• Coach ethically
• Establish and maintain positive relationships
• Develop their communication skills
• Can evaluate their own and others’ coaching performance
• Can improve how they coach
• Can deal with emergencies, injuries and accidents
• Promote martial arts positively and encourage participation

“The ACS Programme was of great benefit to both me and my coaches,” comments Danny (former Northern Ireland Karate Coach and Competitor with 6 All Ireland All Styles Titles and a number of Irish and National Titles), “Regardless of how long you’ve been coaching, unless you’re up to speed with current legislation and best practice coaching methods, you’re not doing yourself or your students justice. The added-value part is that the ACS Programme is run by Martin Rice, a Martial Arts Coach and Management Consultant who is a Senior Coach Tutor for Sportscoach UK and delivers seminars throughout the world, specialising in training systems, learning and development.”

Accessing The Programme

The programme is offered by way of a stream-lined and flexible approach to ensure that candidates are supported to achieve the award. Workshops are augmented by one-to-one support via telephone and e-mail.
