Being able to grapple is an integral part of any self defence training. The title of this video does, however, tell the real truth about the role of grappling in street situations. Basically, you cannot afford to get into a grapple which puts both of you on the floor, but if you do then you must know how to grapple and how to recover from the situation.
Once you have become involved in grappling with an opponent on the ground, you are there an eternity There is no going back to a distance at which you feel more comfortable. But you must know how to grapple to beat those people more skilled in other areas.
Peter Consterdine says: Over the past few years, particularly with the advent of the UFC, grappling has enjoyed a revival. Don't think though that being good at grappling will make you good in the street. If going to ground is your first option then you are going to have big problems. Grappling skills should be sufficient enough to raise confidence if you do go to the ground, but not enough that you would want to stay there and work. There should be enough skills to overcome the panic and freeze that grips people who have not come from a grappling background.
Grappling will win fights, but there are great dangers involved, particularly with multiple opponents. Know how watch this tape.
